Don’t Rush Love: The Danger of Desperation

Pastor Tonya R. Williams · 2026-11-05

The desire to love and be loved is something most people long for. But when relationships and commitment seem out of reach, discouragement can settle in. As time passes and the clock seems to be ticking, the fear of being alone can lead us into a dangerous place—desperation.

And desperation can cause us to accept what wisdom would have warned us to walk away from.

Too often, we fall in love with someone’s potential rather than who they truly are. We overlook red flags, compromise our standards, and convince ourselves that things will get better. We become so focused on having someone that we fail to consider whether that person is truly ready for a relationship.

Being relationship-ready matters. Emotional maturity, financial responsibility, commitment, and the ability to love beyond words are essential. You cannot build a healthy relationship on potential alone. Potential is what someone could become; character reveals who they are today.

Think about it. Would you purchase a broken item at full price, take it home, and hope you could repair it? Yet we enter relationships believing it’s our responsibility to fix someone who hasn’t taken responsibility for themselves. You can support someone’s growth without becoming responsible for their healing. Love should not require you to lose yourself trying to make someone whole.

Remember, being alone while waiting for the right relationship is far better than being lonely in the wrong one.

Take your time. Don’t become attached to the first person who gives you the attention you’ve been missing. Attention is not commitment, chemistry is not compatibility, and promises are not proof of change. Get to know the person beyond the excitement of the beginning. Pay attention to their character, consistency, values, and how they handle challenges.

It’s okay to have standards. You don’t have to settle for less because you’re afraid of waiting longer. The person you choose should be capable of loving, respecting, supporting, and accepting who you are. You should never have to shrink yourself to fit into someone’s inability to love you properly.

Healthy relationships require growth, patience, and development. No one is perfect, and there should always be room to grow together. But growth must be mutual, not one person carrying the weight of two.

And if you’re already in a relationship that seems to be moving too fast, pump the brakes! Slow down and allow time to reveal what emotions may be hiding. Make sure you’re building something meaningful rather than simply filling an empty space.

It takes very little time to rush into the wrong relationship, but recovering from the damage can take years.

Don’t allow the fear of being alone to cost you your peace, your identity, or your future.

Slow down! Love is too important to be rushed and your peace is too valuable to be sacrificed.
